Preparing for La Nina

We've had a run of dry and warm summers so it's about time we had a little rain. But what is a La Nina event and how should you prepare for one?

La Nina explained

La Nina is an event that can bring above-average rainfall to Tasmania, particularly in the north and east of the state. It's caused by a number of factors, including changes in the surface temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean. This may result in torrential rain, floods and storms.

The last time we had a La Nina event was back in 2010. What followed were two of the wettest years on record with widespread flooding across much of Tasmania.

Check your cover

The first thing you can do is check your insurance policy. Flood cover is standard with our Insurance policies, but some insurers may not offer this automatically. If in doubt, give your insurer a quick call to find out.

You could also take some time to assess your sum insured. It's often a misconception that the resale value of your home should be the amount you insure it for. However, this doesn't take into account other factors such as the removal of debris. These handy calculators can help you make sure you have the correct amount of cover.

You can make sure your home is prepared by:

  • Maintaining roofs and guttering. If it's unsafe to do this yourself, contact a licensed contractor to do it for you.

  • Having your roof assessed for leaks to ensure it's watertight. You could also seal any large gaps around your windows and doors.

Stay informed

Flash flooding can happen very quickly. Stay alert and tune in to local media for current weather advice and warnings.

  • Always prepare for a worst-case scenario. Make a flood emergency plan and discuss it with your family ahead of time.

  • Know where your gas, electricity and water mains are in case you need to turn them off.

  • If a warning is issued, follow the advice of local authorities.

You can also take a look at the SES website for further advice on flood preparation.
